The protest leader and former South African president, who died at the age of 95, has been portrayed on screen by a wide range of actors, including Danny Glover (Mandela) and Morgan Freeman (Invictus). Most recently, Idris Elba played the South African leader in the current movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Terrence Howard portrayed him in Winnie Mandela. The Special A.K.A. scored a hit with Free Nelson Mandela in 1984, and the 1985 protest song Sun City, written by E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt and featuring and all-star roster of guest musicians including Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Run DMC, Peter Gabriel and U2, helped raise awareness of South Africas racist policy of apartheid. Were rockers and rappers united and strong, the lyrics to Sun City declared. Were here to talk about South Africa we dont like whats going on. The Weinstein Company Stevie Wonder dedicated his Oscar for his 1984 song I Just Called To Say I Love You to the then still-imprisoned Mandela, spurring a ban on Wonders music in South Africa. Throughout his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela writes of the protest songs that helped shore up the spirits of freedom fighters in his country.

I was in awe of all the different outfits. I thought the woman that played Mother Abbess [Audra McDonald], her Climb Evry Mountain brought tears to my eyes. The one piece that I felt was missing from when you see the live version of the play is you didnt get a reaction from the audience. They didnt play that. Theres little clips that definitely get a chuckle or a laugh. I somehow thought they were going to be in front of a live audience. Kym Karath, Gretl I personally love Carrie Underwood, I just didnt think this was that great.
