Chamber Music Society Of Lincoln Center Returns To St. Cecilia Music Center For Second Season

Clarinetist David Shifrin, former artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, returns to Grand Rapids on May 8, 2014, for a program including Brahms’ Sonata in E-flat major for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 120, No. 2 with pianist Inon Barnatan. A newly commissioned work by Chinese composer Zhou Long for clarinet, violin, viola and piano will receive its American premiere in Grand Rapids with violinist Benjamin Beilman and violist Paul Neubauer joining Shifrin and Barnatan. Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for music for his opera “Madame White Snake,” Zhou Long was awarded the 2012-13 Elise L.

Chamber Music Night Arrives After Semester-Long Prep

This was followed by music by the oldest composer, Nick Benavides. The piece was a prelude and fugue based on the song Old Friends from Bookends, the 1968 album of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. As might be guessed, the distinctive opening interval of this song emerged as a key motif, although I had a bit more trouble detecting the essence of the song in the fugal treatment. For me this was a rather engaging bit of nostalgia, leaving me thinking about how the source material predated the composers birth by about two decades. The final selection was De Profundis by Danny Clay, who currently runs the Guerrila Composers Guild with Benavides.

Her instruction of the clarinets started at the beginning of fall semester. Two practices per weekin their ensembles, then with their coachhave prepared the 12 students for Tuesdays concert, which is expected to last just under an hour. Several of the nights performers will even appear in more than one ensemble. A few flutes can be found in both flute ensembles, and a clarinet and flute from their respective quartets appear in the woodwind quintet. Alyson Hubrig, a senior majoring in mathematics, is in two flute ensembles and in the woodwind quintet. Zach Pavlicek, a junior studying music is in both the clarinet quartet and woodwind quintet. Besides making double appearances in ensembles, some of the performers are also double majors.
