An early gift from the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society
This was music to grab the listeners attention through novelty and hold it through technical discipline. This was followed by music by the oldest composer, Nick Benavides. The piece was a prelude and fugue based on the song Old Friends from Bookends, the 1968 album of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. As might be guessed, the distinctive opening interval of this song emerged as a key motif, although I had a bit more trouble detecting the essence of the song in the fugal treatment. For me this was a rather engaging bit of nostalgia, leaving me thinking about how the source material predated the composers birth by about two decades.
